Kuzuko Food – Karoo Food!
At Kuzuko we seek to make visible what is often regarded as being of no consequence and “everyday”. We strive to capture the essence of the home style Karoo in our cooking.
Karoo cooking has become less about what you do with the food, and more about the quality and freshness of the produce you use. We follow the very same style of cooking our Grandmothers use to, even the same old recipes. These recipes will always remain the same – they are ancient, part of tradition and unique to the Karoo culture, and one should respect that. There is no need to alter the recipe; just enhance what is already there. Every ingredient has it specific and unique irreplaceable purpose.
Most of our produce is sourced locally, as we believe that is where the root of any dish starts. It is hard to capture the essence of the Karoo, if you source ingredients from elsewhere. One has to include local favourites like Karoo lamb, honey roasted sweet potatoes, seared venison, gorgeous Hertzoggies and Melktert if you want your cooking to pass as ‘Karoo cuisine’. Throw in a couple of your own ideas into the mix, like our ‘Karoo-krieke’ (Vanilla fried Tiger Prawns), or our Blushing Pears with Wine-custard, and you can count on having a pretty good time once the dinner bell rings.
There is something about Karoo food that just brings people together, no matter what age, race, gender, culture or nationality. That is what we strive to achieve with the food at Kuzuko. The dish in front of you, should enhance the relationship with the one next to you and across from you. That, to us, is Karoo cooking at its very best. Our food aims to evoke emotions from and interaction between our guests. Interactions that end up making great stories and creating precious memories.
The Karoo is known for its people and their stories – ‘stoepstories’ as it is referred to. And every guest here has a story; every employee has a story… It is the people at Kuzuko that breathes life into the experience. Yes the facilities are great, and yes the animals and the scenery contribute, but it is the people that make memories. They are the ones adding to your story, and that in itself is priceless – you can’t measure it.
To eat is to live; might as well do it with passion then….
Our place of glory is blessed with an incredible variety of available activities – each of which is conducted by a well-trained, extremely knowledgeable guide whose goal is to keep you entertained and safe.
Game drives may take place as the sun rises, mid morning, during the afternoon, as the sun sets and at night depending on the time of year. Our experienced guides are sure to track and point out the many species of fauna and flora which occur on Kuzuko. With nocturnal animals out and about, sunrise, sunset and night drives offer a very different view of the wild. Dependent on the time of your game drive, please enjoy a complimentary hot beverage like hot chocolate, tea or coffee with home-made rusks or a snack and local beverage. Bottled water is supplied complimentary with all wildlife activities.
During a cheetah experience the fastest animal on land invites you for a leisurely stroll at Kuzuko… Our cheetahs have learnt to tolerate the presence of humans, which allows for the exclusive experience of getting up close and personal with one of Africa’s big cats during a guided walking safari. While enjoying unique photo opportunities, guests are left in awe as they come away humbled by spending time on ground level and within close proximity of these impressively aloof predators. An additional fee may be charged for this activity on behalf of the Kuzuko Foundation to assist funding their Wildlife Rehabilitation efforts – assisting us in our endeavours to preserve Africa’s wildlife legacy.
Our guided nature walk and cave exploration takes visitors back in time with the magic of 400 year old Khoisan cave paintings. Located just outside of the Big 5 reserve, this area is stocked with plains game and the walk forms a large part of our community conservation education component.
The African sky comes alive as night falls over our place of glory – creating perfect conditions for a cosmic safari. While they may be light years away, the heavenly bodies seem close enough to touch as Kuzuko offers some of the best stargazing in Africa all because of our off the beaten track location. The trained game rangers trade their binoculars for laser pointers as they guide you through galaxies, pointing out stars, planets, moons and other astral bodies through the lodge’s eight inch stargazing telescope. This uniquely exclusive activity offers the magical experience of viewing not just the majestic Big Five at the lodge, but also the glory of the mystical sky above the lodge.
Challenging 4×4 routes offer guests the ride of a lifetime, while bird watching enthusiasts are in for a real ‘tweet’ as the diversity of birdlife within the park is nothing short of amazing. All the above activities are weather dependent.
