Discover a hidden gem of the Eastern Cape
Kuzuko is an ambitious rewilding project with a big vision where guests can experience South African wildlife in all its glory. Our special reserve begun over 20 years ago when 22 farms were combined, old fence lines and buildings removed, and the land returned to nature. Since then, many species that have been absent for more than 150 years have been reintroduced and many other species have also returned once nature was given the space to thrive.
We pride ourselves on delivering a wildlife experience that goes beyond the Big Five. Our elephant herd and lion pride are often undoubtedly the stars of the show, but nature’s intricate little details that connect the ecosystem and keep it functioning and healthy are just as fascinating to us.
One of the things that makes Kuzuko so special is the diversity of the landscape with three of South Africa’s nine biomes found on the reserve and varied topography with rolling hills and craggy valleys in the south giving way to expansive open Karoo plains in the North.
Conservation At Kuzuko
By staying at Kuzuko you are actively supporting conservation in action. Our work would not be possible without guests like you coming and staying with us.
Wildlife Experiences
Our twice daily drives are a fantastic way to experience African wildlife up close and personal. Being the only lodge on our expansive 35,000-acre reserve, Kuzuko’s guests are able to enjoy sightings in an unrushed, uncrowded and ethical way – the best way to experience wildlife.
As always with wildlife, the only thing that’s guaranteed is that it will be an adventure! However, our experienced guides know Kuzuko and its wildlife well giving you a great chance of great sightings. With low guest densities we are able to sustainably drive off road allowing us to get you closer to the action where the terrain allows. Best of all, our previous spekboom reforestation projects have already captured enough carbon to counteract the emissions from our game drives meaning you can enjoy your wildlife experience knowing that it is carbon neutral.
Getting Out in Nature
If you love getting out in nature, we also have a 1,500 acre educational area outside the main reserve which you can enjoy on foot with no dangerous game. It’s a beautiful area to hike made all the more special by the chance of encountering a giraffe on foot or experiencing ancient rock art in our sandstone caves.
Experiencing nature on foot is a great way to discover all the tiny but vital intricacies that make up our unique ecosystem. Our guides can tailor your walk to suit your needs, whether you’re after a gentle stroll focussed on discovering nature and enjoying the view, or an a vigorous hike to make some extra room for chef’s delicious Karoo cuisine.

MEET THE LOCALS
Now that it’s been protected for conservation our landscape supports a huge variety of wildlife. Here’s just a few of the characters you might come across at Kuzuko.
Did you know?
Spekboom is a very special tree that is really well adapted at capturing carbon even when there is very little rainfall. It does this by a special process known as CAM photosynthesis whereby the leaves open their pores at night to capture carbon dioxide from the cool air then close their pores and photosynthesise during the hot day without losing moisture.
