Frequent travellers know that packing is an art. Better to have something and not need it than to need it and not have it, right? Well, with a bit of help we can help you reconcile those two notions: Know what you will need, pack it, and have it!
The Karoo is a landscape of dramatic contrasts, especially in winter. Mornings that begin close to freezing warm into beautiful afternoons that hover in the mid-teens, and evenings drop sharply again once the sun disappears behind the mountains. If you’re wondering what to wear on safari in South Africa, getting your packing right makes the difference between a comfortable, immersive stay and a cold, teeth-chattering one. (Though we’d never let that happen!)
Here is everything you need to know before you zip up that bag of yours and set off to join us.

The Eastern Cape in June
June days in the Eastern Cape are mild and sunny, with daytime temperatures ranging from 16°C to 22°C. Nights, however, can be very cold (between 0°C and 3°C in June and July), so packing accordingly is essential. The Karoo plateau in particular is prone to wide variations in temperature, and frost on winter mornings is common.
The silver lining? The dry winter season is the best time for game viewing, as the cover is greatly reduced and animals are forced to utilise fewer water sources. June is prime safari season at Kuzuko, and the clear, dry air produces some of the most spectacular light of the year for photographers.

What to Wear on Safari in South Africa
Layers, layers, layers
The golden rule of a winter safari is to dress in layers you can add or peel off as the day warms. Think a base layer of a long-sleeved thermal or fitted top, a fleece for the morning drive, and a heavier outer jacket for the early and late game drives when the chill is at its sharpest. (Preferably a windbreaker.) Even if it is close to freezing during the night, afternoon temperatures can ramp up quickly once the sun is up. It’s confusing, we know.

For game drives
Don’t forget your extremities – gloves, beanies and scarves will not go unused! A beanie is essential to guard against the cold and the wind when driving in an open game vehicle. Gloves will be needed, too. We provide extra blankets on the vehicle.

Footwear
Pack trainers or sturdy walking shoes for bush walks, something cosy for your cottage, and a pair of slides or slip-ons for the lodge.
Neutral colours
Safari etiquette calls for muted, earthy tones like khaki, olive, stone, tan and brown. Leave the whites and bright colours at home – these can disturb wildlife or draw unwanted attention from insects.

Sun protection
Do not let the winter temperatures fool you. The winter sun is gentler than the summer sun, but it still burns, and at altitude in the Karoo the UV exposure is significant. Pack a wide-brimmed hat or cap that will stay on in an open vehicle, and high-SPF sunscreen.
Camera and binoculars
Winter game viewing at Kuzuko is exceptional; sparser vegetation means more sightings, and the golden winter light is a photographer’s dream. Bring a camera with a good zoom lens, spare memory cards, and a pair of binoculars to make the most of distant sightings.
Keep it light
A soft-sided bag or duffel is always preferable to a hard-shell suitcase for safari travel. You will wear the same jacket, the same boots and the same hat most days, and that is totally expected!
